Claire Trant

Co-Founder, Untap Health

Claire’s prior work includes innovation in wastewater technologies, she worked on the forefront of international regulation change and innovation. In this work she led international European licensing agreements for nitrate and phosphate removal technologies into British companies. During the COVID-19 pandemic sewage surveillance was being widely used, but very manual. This drove Claire to start Untap Health. She also has a PhD with Rolls Royce Aerospace, understanding failures in materials of military aerospace engines, and ensuring their success in commercial engines.

Problem

Illnesses are only detected when symptoms emerge. Infectious diseases can be infectious up to a week before symptoms, or never show symptoms at all. Other illnesses progress to later stages before they can be detected. Regularly individually testing every member of the community is cost inefficient, time-wasting and logistical challenge.

Solution

We have a created a patent-pending device that any community can install to monitor their health in real-time, detecting both asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic people before symptoms present. A single device can monitor multiple pathogens, and once installed is fully automated. This device is installed in the outgoing sewage of the building and provides daily updates on the population’s overall health, letting you know what measures to implement and when, if any.

Business Model

B2B monthly subscription model starting from £600 per month. Prices increase with increased number of bio-markers being measured (including COVID-19, influenza and Norovirus), and with increased frequency of measurement (i.e., daily vs. hourly measurements).

Competition

Currently, sewage testing technologies are manual, therefore slow, inefficient and expensive. Examples include Biobot analytics and Kando. Untap’s automated, onsite sewage surveillance provides real-time data, over ten times cheaper than competitors.

Traction

We have raised $2m in total, $500k in grants, and generated $220k revenue. Our team is now ten people. We won UK British Angel Award of Growth Woman Founder in 2023.
